VIVEKANANDA MEMORIAL ROCK

On the evening of December 25, 1892, Swami Vivekananda who had come to Kannyakumari on pilgrimage swam to the rock and spent the whole night there in deep meditation. He then resolved to decide himself to the service of the Motherland and to spread the message of Vedanta. Next year he attended the Parliament of Religions in Chicago, an event of seminal importance in the modern history of Hinduism. To commemorate his visit to the rock a superb memorial has been erected. It attracts thousands of visitors. 


THIRUVALLUVAR STATUE

This statue is the immortal poet of Tamil Nadu and has given to the world Thirukkural. The memorial statue of Thiruvalluvar is in Kanyakumari. The pedestal of the statue is of 38 feet height and the statue over it is 95 feet tall with a grand total of 133 feet for the entire sculpture.


MUTTOM BEACH

It 16 kms from Nagercoil and 32 kms from Kanyakumari.  Muttom is a delightful place on the coast of Kalkulam taluk, attracting people desirous of having a seaside holyday.  The seashore looks majestic because of huge beautiful rocks jetting out into the sea.  The waves touch the rocks and create a mystic atmosphere.  Muttom beach is a famous shooting spot of both Tamil and Malayalam movies.
            This seashore is having a rich heritage value for its ancient light house, which was originally established by the British in 1875 and subsequently improved in 1909.  The sunset view point here is one of the most panoramic view points in the district. Frequent bus services are available from Nagercoil.


GANDHI MANDAPAM

In honour of the father of the nation, a Mandapam was constructed in such a manner that the sun's rays falls on the exact spot where his ashes were once laid . This occurs every year on his birthday on 2nd of October. The Memorial resembles a contemporary version of an Orissa temple, Permitted to visit the site daily between 7.00 am until 12.30 pm and 3.00 pm untill 7.00 pm.

The Mathoor bridge is the tallest as well as the longest trough bridge in Asia, having a height of 115 feet.  Constructed in 1969, this bridge has became a place of tourist importance.  The bridge has been constructed at Mathoor across the river Parazhiyar and the trough canal on the bridge carries water for irrigation from one side of a hill to the other side of a hill.  The trough has a length of 384 metre and a height of 7 feet with a width of 7 feet 6 inches.  The canal is being shouldered by 29 huge pillars.  The district administration has created tourism infrastructure facilities over here.  It is 60 kms from Kanyakumari.

The water falls from a height of nearly 72 feet and the water flows for about seven months in a year. The whole bed above the falls is one rocky mass which extends up to a distance of about quarter of a kilometer upstream where the famous Thirparappu weir has been constructed for supplying water to the paddy fields. On either side of the river, on the left bank of the river in between the water falls and the weir, there is a temple dedicated to Siva enclosed by strong fortification.

Padmanabhapuram palace (22 km from Nagercoil), once the seat of the Travancore kings, is India's only palace made completely of wood (16th century). It is situated at a distance of 45 Kms from Kanyakumari.

About 43 km. from Nagercoil this dam has been constructed.The length of the dam is 425.1 mts. It has a catchment area of 204.8 sq.km. There is a camp shed provided at the dam side for the visitors. The weather is very pleasant and hence attracts a large number of tourists. The reservoir is surrounded by dense forests which are famous for their valuable trees and rich wild life such as tiger, elephants, deer etc. A hill tribe, small in number known as ‘Kanikars’ dwell in the dense forests around the lake. 



SUCHINDRAM TEMPLE

Suchindrum is a small village about 12 km. from Kanyakumari and about seven kilometres from Nagercoil. This holy place is located on the bank of the river Pazhayar, adjoining fertile fields and coconut groves and the temple is dedicated to Sri Sthanumalayan. The word denotes Siva, Vishnu and Brahmma as. Sthanu represents Siva, Mal represents Vishnu while Ayan represents Brahmma i.e. Siva, Vishnu and Brahamma in “One Form”.The Thanumalayan Temple  here is a repository of art treasures. Musical pillars and huge 18 foot Hanuman Statue are the proof of the artistic skill of the time. This unique temple is dedicated to the Trimurthys Vishnu, Siva and Brahmma. Two chief attractions are the gigantic Hanuman and Vainayaki (Female Vinayaka) relief carving.  It is a complex of many beautiful structures constructed at various times and is one of the best specimens and a store house of the Dravidian style of art and architecture. 



THIRUVATTAR VISHNU TEMPLE

The temple here is dedicated to Adi Kesava Perumal in the Ananthasayanam posture (Sleeping) and is considered one of the 13 sacred places for Vaishnavas.  The inscriptions found in the temple fix its age to the 12th century.  Remains of old mural paintings belonging to a period not later than the 17th century are seen on the walls of the inner shrine.  Wood carving of exquisite workmanship adorn some of the structure in the temple.  It is about 11 kms north of Thuckalay on Nagercoil – Kulasekhram road and 46 kms from Kanyakumari.
 


 
UDAYAGIRI FORT

                      Udayagiri fort is located at a distance of 14 km from Nagercoil .It had been originally built in the 1600s, and then rebuilt by the King Marthanda Varma of Travancore during 1741-44 under the supervision of Eustachius De Lannoy, a flemish naval commander of the Dutch East India Company, who later served as the Chief of the Travancore Army.

Enclosing an area of about 90 acres (36 ha), with an isolated hill 260 feet (79 m) high, the fort contains an old foundry which was used for casting guns.

This was the most important military barracks of the Travancore rulers, when Padmanabhapuram was their capital. Prisoners captured in the campaign against Tippu Sultan were confined in this fort for some time. The fort is built of massive granite blocks around an isolated hillock.

The tombs of the Dutch Admiral Eustachius De Lannoy, (in whose honour the fort was once called Dillanai Kottai— De Lennoy's Fort), and of his wife and son could be seen inside a partly ruined chapel in the fort.

                                  De Lannoy's body was buried within the fort and a chapel was built at his burial site. De Lannoy's tomb in the fort is marked out by a stone cross planted on the top, with the inscription in both Tamil and Latin. His wife and son were buried by his side.

Recently, officials of the Department of Archaeology found an underground tunnel within the fort. Tourists can see deer, ducks, fountains, birds and over 100 varieties of trees inside the fort.

               
                                                St.XAVIER CHURCH

                     St.Xavier an outstanding and dedicated priest visited the coastal areas of Tamil Nadu.The church records show that the church was built in the year 1600 A.D.  In the year 1865, the Church was enlarged and the shrine of our lady was also renovated and vaulted over.  In 1930, the church was raised to the status of a Cathedral. 
   
In 1942, in commemoration of the fourth centenary of the arrival of St.Xavier in India, a beautiful tower to the saint, a grotto to Out Blessed Mother and a small shrine to St.Ignatius who sent him to India were constructed in the Cathedral premises.  In 1955, the church was further extended and the chapel of Our Lady was incorporated into the enlarged church.

 

The Church of St. Xavier enjoys a great fame as a place of miracles from early times.  The annual festival is celebrated during the month of November – December lasting for 10 days.


PEER MOHAMMED OLIYULLAH DURHA

There is a durha named ‘Peer Mohamed Oliyullah Durha’ at Thuckalay named after the great philosopher Mohamed Appa, who was born in Tenkasi of Tirunelveli District.

The Anniversary of the great philosopher poet is celebrated every year on a grand scale on the full moon day in the month of Rajap.  Both the people of Kerala and Tamil Nadu attend the celebrations on large numbers irrespective of their caste, creed and religion.
 


 
VATTAKOTTAI FORT

                                               Vattakottai, a granite fort which is situated six kilometres north-east of Kanyakumari cape, forms the terminal of a line of ramparts known as the South Tranvancore lines built by Marthanda Varma to serve as defence for Nanjil Nadu. It is rectangular in shape and covers an area of about three and a half acres. The fort is enclosed by walls 25 to 26 feet high, including the parapet, 29 feet thick at the front, 18 feet at the corners and 6 feet at the rear.The best thing in this fort is its situated in sea shore with very pleasant natural scenery.


 ULAKAI ARUVI (WATER FALLS)

                 As the waterfalls looklike a pestle ('ulakai' in Tamil), it is known as Ulakai Aruvi.
Ulakai Aruvi is situated about 40 km north of kanyakumari. 

BUS Route:- 
Kanyakumari -----> Nagercoil -----> Puthery ----->Thittuvilai -----> Azhagiyapandiyapuram ----->Perunthalaikadu.
               
 Till Perunthalaikadu, there is road network. From Perunthalaikadu,
you have to trek for about 3 Kms inside the forest to reach the falls.

Have to clamber the rocky steps to reach Ulakai Aruvi.

Ulakkai Aruvi is a natural waterfall situated in Azhagiapandipuram village.  Water is available in this water fall in the summer season.  Many tourists come here for bathing and to enjoy the nature.  The pathway to this waterfall lies in the Reserve Forest. So you get the very pure air and the place is pin drop silent....


MUKKUDAL DAM

                                                  The dam is surrounded by forested hills on three sides; and a charming road that leads you to the forest. It is described as a ‘natural earthen dam’, unique because it is constructed only with clay and granite.

                                                   Roughly 12 km from Nagercoil town, the Mukkudal Dam is built across the Vambaru River. It was built by the King of Travancore, Chitira Tirunal, in 1645. The storage is around 50 feet. The picturesque setting and the clean water make it a pleasant spot for a picnic and some boating too.

How to get there
 
There are regular bus services from Nagercoil. Disembark at Thuvarancaud or Thittuvilai and take a brief autorickshaw ride to the dam.


                                                      CHOTHAVILAI BEACH

                                             The Sotha Vilai or Chothavilai beach is one among the most important beaches in the district of Kanyakumari. The beach here stretches over 4 km which make it one among the longest beaches in Tamil Nadu. It is about 10 km from Kanyakumari.

Shallow water makes Chothavilai ideal for swimming. With high sand dunes in the background and an endless aqua blue sea stretching into distance, the few hours spent at this beach will be truly memorable.

                             Government Museum is situated near the Tourist Office, Beach Road, Kanyakumari. The Museum contains bronzes, coins, tribal objects, wood carvings and zoological and botanical specimens. The Museum’s collection also contains whale-bones from Manavalakurichi in Kanyakumari District.

Entrance Fee: Rs.5/- for Indian nationals and Rs.100/- for foreigners. It will be open from 10:00 A.M to 5:30 P.M. Fridays and second Saturday will be holiday.   


                                                     KUMARI - HALL OF HISTORY

                                                             It is located south side of Kanyakumari Railway Station exhibits the pictures of historical wonders and also comprised rare photographs OF Gandhiji and other freedom fighters.It consists of over 300 art works by prominent artists depicting the historical arts, photos and historical information about kanyakumari.

Here you can purchase palm leaf hats, clay toys and also other handicrafts made out of palm tree materials.


                                                            HILOCK JAIN TEMPLE

                                              Chitharal is a small village situated at a distance of 7 kms from Marthandam and 45 kms from kanyakumari.  It is famous for the rock-cut temple.  Hilock at Chitharal has a cave containing rock-cut sculptures of Thirthankaras and attendant deities carved inside and outside dating back to 9th century A.D.  It was converted into Bhagavathy temple in the 13th century A.D.  Cars and vans can go up to the foot of the hill.  One has to walk for about 10 minutes to reach the temple.  The Jain images have been preserved by Central Archaeological Survey of India.

                                 
                                                 THENGAPATTINAM BEACH

                                      Thengapattinam situated on the west coast near Painkulam village in Vilavancode taluk is having a fine beach adorned with coconut groves. This village had in ancient times, trade relations with foreign Thengapattinam and other foreign maritime towns.  Copra, dry fish, coir and shark fin were the main products that were exported.

                                      Thengapattinam is having the estuary of the lovely river Tamiraparani with its non-salty water entering the sea.  The river back waters are surrounded by charming dense coconut groves.  Boat riding on the rier backwaters is really an enjoyable one.  It is 35 kms from Nagercoil.  12 kms from Kuzhithurai and 54 kms from Kanyakumari.  Frequent bus services are available.

                  Nagercoil, the name of which is derived from the five headed serpent shrine of Nagaraja, is situated in the heart of Kanyakumari district. Besides the presiding deity Nagaraja, the image of Siva and Ananthakrishna have been enshrined in the Arthamandapa and the pillarsof the mandapa bear carved figures of Jain Thirthankaras Parsavanth and Mahavira. The beautiful main gateway of the temple known as Mahamerumaligai reminds us of the Buddhist monastery. Thus the temple stands as an embodiment of the four creeds of Indian religion Saivism, Vaishnavism, Jainism and finally Buddhism.


                       MONDAIKADU BHAGAVATHY TEMPLE

                                                                Mondaikadu is situated in the sea coast, north - east of Colachel Port. It is connected with Nagercoil and Trivandrum by a motorable road. It is 22 kms., from Nagercoil and 41 kms., form Kanniyakumari. This place is famous for its temple dedicated to Bagavathy Amman, dates back to the 7 th century B.C. The Amman is in the form of anthill which is about 12 feet in height and with five heads and believed to be growing gradually. The annual festival called Mondaikadu Kodai is celebrated in March for 10 days and is the main attraction at this place. Department of Tourism, Government of Tamilnadu, organises Photographic Exhibition during the festival.

            It is beautiful beach which is very convenient for the local population of Nagercoil.  The beach lies in Rajakkamangalam .It is 13 kms from Nagercoil and 15 kms from kanyakumari through West Coast road.  Frequent buses are available from Nagercoil.  The District administration has provided basic infrastructure facilities here.  It is a developing beach centre. 





                                   KALIKESAM FOREST

                                                           This ancient temple to Murugan (2nd son of Lord SHIVA) known as Kumaran Koyil is located at Padmanabhapuram, home to the palace of the erstwhile Maharaja, on the slopes of the Veli hills. It is located in a commanding position, visible for miles around. 

Legend has it that Murugan married Valli here and hence the name Velimalai, Manamalai or Kalyanamala.
